Buying per Square Foot?

There is something that puzzles architect Ed Binkley about the current state of home building and buying. “We don’t buy cars by the pound, so why should we buy homes by the square footage?” says Binkley, an Oviedo, Fla.-based partner in the venerable architecture firm BSB Design.

Because “we buy cars based on comfort, price, accessibility, features, uniqueness, and how well they address our needs, wants, and desires,” Binkley believes, we should use the same criteria for making our home buying decisions.

Since the current trend is to build a smaller home and load it up with high end options and cutting edge technology. What do you think? Should we value a home more on the quality, features, lifestyle instead of its size?

post for comments below. thanks

I see what you're saying, but it's often tough to compare apples to apples among builders if you don't have some sort of baseline price.

For instance, another local builder makes the same argument, that price per square foot varies because of how it's measured, customization, etc... BUT, they also happen to be the highest priced around. Nothing wrong with making a profit, but if you're not even in the ballpark with price per square foot, you might have issues with overhead or maybe you just charge a premium. People are pinching their pennies right now and it's not as easy to take a 20% cut like the "good old days."

That said, if you're selling to a specific clientele that isn't as concerned with price, then price per square foot shouldn't matter as much.

It is always better to buy properties per square foot. In this way, different towns will have different prices per square foot.
